ISU Developmental Psychology Students Work With Illinois Art Station – News



The Illinois Art Station at Illinois State University is an educational resource committed to fostering creative thinking and expression in the visual arts. The result of a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Fine Arts, the Illinois Art Station seeks to develop learning and critical thinking skills, communicate emotions, and inspire artistic creativity in children. .

Ashley Adams and Rebecca Bove, graduate students in the Developmental Sequence of the Department of Psychology, worked closely with the Illinois Art Station to study its impact on young children. Adams and Bove were proud to share some of the details of what they hope to accomplish through their work.

“Ashley and I are research scientists who have collected and examined data on how an Itsy Art program influences the social and emotional development of young children. With the data collected, Illinois Art Station can use it to improve their program and reach more people in the community by applying for grants and the like. Ashley and I are here to help Illinois Art Station with data collection and to see the influence of their art program on children. With the data collected, we hope that publications can come out of it, which will ultimately help Illinois Art Station meet the goals it has for its programs, ”said Bove.

“Our job is to act as a liaison between the arts education department and developmental psychology to ensure effective arts programming. Our work requires us to communicate the plausibility of projects and contribute to research that aligns with the Illinois Art Station’s core values ​​of providing transformative visual art experiences to children and youth in the community. We use our training as researchers and our knowledge of developmental psychology to teach other members of the organization. We are also looking for grants that would allow more research projects to be carried out, ”said Adams.
