Guest artwork ideas for installing lifts at Handforth station

ARTISTS are invited to submit their ideas for artwork to complete the proposed installation of lifts at Handforth Station.

The invitation comes from Friends of Handforth Station (FoGS), who plan to involve artists and the community in the design process before work begins.

Group secretary Hugh Everett said Network Rail and Northern Trains were continuing to plan for new lifts to be installed at the station in 2022, and if government restrictions on building work allowed, the lifts could be in place by the end of 2021.

He said: “The new lifts create a wonderful opportunity to further improve the station, building on the station’s existing ‘platform for art’.”

FoHS has released an “Artist Brief,” which invites submissions for additional artwork to complete the installation of the elevators.

Jenny Barnes, FoHS Art Coordinator, said: “We will ensure that the artwork submitted reflects the nature of the community and meets the needs of everyone involved with the station. We invite artists to identify possible artistic enhancements to new construction work and then design them.

“In addition to the elevators themselves, the tracks, fencing, seating, signage and other associated works also provide opportunity for inclusion in the design process.”

The artists file can be found at handforthstation.org.uk/. The deadline for submission is May 15 and Jenny can be contacted for further information via [email protected]
