Art Appreciation Tours for People with Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the Kilkenny Gallery

The Butler Gallery in Kilkenny will be hosting a dementia friendly event next week on Tuesday 20th September 2022. Azure Tours are free facilitated dementia inclusive events for older people, their families and supporters.

Azure Tours was created as part of Museums Art and Alzheimer’s, a European project that ran between 2015 and 2017, aimed at facilitating access to museums and the arts for people with dementia, their families and professional helpers. The project increased cross-sectoral collaboration between the culture, social care and health sectors at local and European level. The ultimate goal was to help build a dementia-friendly society.

Butler Gallery worked with five partner organizations from Italy, Germany and Lithuania to achieve two project outcomes:

Training for museum educators and geriatric activity coordinators who want to create or implement museum programs for people with dementia and their carers, with a particular focus on developing communication tools.

A skills course for family and professional caregivers. The objective is to develop an “educational” relationship through art; explore effective communication and non-verbal understanding within the care relationship.

Ideas explored by the project include: What role do artists, museums and galleries play in a dementia-friendly society? What is the value of arts programs for people with dementia, their families and caregivers? How can innovative and creative thinkers positively impact the lives of people with dementia, their families and caregivers?

Butler Gallery is a founding member of the Azure network, alongside Age and Opportunity, the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. This collaborative partnership has been active in exploring the potential for greater involvement of people with dementia in cultural contexts in Ireland since 2012.

During the Azure Tour, visitors will explore artwork from the Butler Gallery’s collections and exhibits with a facilitator trained in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Inclusive Art Programs.

The group session is limited to 8 people and two Butler Gallery facilitators. Advance booking is required at https://www.butlergallery.ie/whats-on/azure-programme

Tea and coffee are served after the tour.
