An 80ft artwork of Mahatma Gandhi at Central Station

Chennai: Southern Railway has unveiled an 80ft long mural to mark the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and the farewell of the Swachchta Pakhwada (cleanliness command).

A statement from the railways here said the Chennai Division has unveiled this magnificent 80ft mural of Mahatma Gandhi at the Moore Market Complex (MMC) building which serves as a commuter rail terminal.

This work of art, which was designed as part of the beautification of the Chennai Central Station complex, was a fitting tribute to the Father of the Nation who had redefined the ideal of cleanliness and sanitation in consciousness collective of the community.

The mural was created in collaboration with Renault Nissan Technology and Business Center, was unveiled to the public.

The mural depicts the original sketch of Mahatma Gandhi getting off a train and being received by several political leaders, including Sardar Vallabhai Patel, drawn by retired artist MA Sankaralingam.

The mural was completed in just eight days and a large crane was used to paint at such height. This illustrative sketch of the Mahatma disembarking from a train has been prominently featured in many prominent places in India.
